Cryptozoic Announces the Release of The Arrival

The-Arrival

Feb 14, 2018

Cryptozoic Entertainment, in partnership with Game’s Up: Board Game Heroes, announced the February 21 release of The Arrival. Created by famed designer Martin Wallace, the strategy board game puts 2-4 players in the roles of Tribe Leaders as they vie with each other and the demon-like Fomori for control of ancient Ireland. The unique gameplay includes two different victory conditions as determined by whether the Tribe Leaders or the Fomori control more of the map at the end of play. Cryptozoic’s wide release of the acclaimed game, previously released in limited quantities at the Essen Game Fair in 2016, upgrades the art, improves various components, and adds a new Advanced Game variant.

The original release of Martin Wallace’s The Arrival earned the Seal of Excellence from The Dice Tower, the highly regarded YouTube channel and audio podcast about tabletop games. Cryptozoic’s version adds brighter, more stylish art from Kamila Szutenberg that takes it inspiration from the game’s Irish fantasy premise. In addition, this release of the game makes adjustments to the board (including the placement of the Corruption and Round Tracks) and other components in order to improve the flow of play.

In The Arrival, each round is comprised of two phases of play. During the Earning Phase, each player decides which row of earnings to acquire across all four of his or her cards, even though the player is not able to see all of them. If players try to earn more Resources to help spread their Tribes, they also gain undesirable Corruption Points and Fomori in the process. In contrast, if players aim to acquire Honor Points, they also gain fewer Resources and therefore risk losing ground to the other Tribes and the Fomori. During the Action Phase, players can Build or Shield fortifications, Repel or Spread the Fomori, and more. Strategy is key as the winner is either the one with the highest Honor or lowest Corruption, depending on whether the Tribes or the Fomori control more locations at the conclusion of play.

Cryptozoic’s release of the game adds an Advanced Game variant that gives each player’s Tribe Leader a special ability, such as gaining extra actions, not paying the costs of some actions, or having extra-strong fortifications.

The Arrival will be available at retailers nationwide February 21 for a suggested retail price of $40.

Omens of the Pharaoh Is Now Available for Elder Sign from Fantasy Flight Games.

The time has come to set out into the land of Egypt and attempt to stop the rise of the dreaded Nephren-Ka, the Dark Pharaoh from an age long since passed from the memory and recorded history of mankind. Omens of the Pharaoh, an expansion for the cooperative dice game Elder Sign, is now available!

You’ve heard that the desert’s heat can play some terrible tricks on the mind. You desperately hope that the scene in front of you is one of those tricks, an illusion you can simply deny and forget. The air swims and shimmers all about the edges of your vision, as the sands before you bulge with the subterranean passage of innumerable slithering abominations. Spindly horrors with dozens of chirping, chittering mouths skitter between the yawning crypts that line your path on either side.

The entrance to the Lightless Pyramid is swarming with the awful minions of Nephren-Ka, but thankfully their attention is elsewhere. A booming howl, equal parts triumph and pain, abruptly bursts from every gaping passageway that leads deep within the ruins, and the gathered throng of monstrosities rushes underground. They vanish beneath the sand, and, in the strained and uncomfortable silence that follows, you almost convince yourself that it had been a trick of the heat. Almost, but not quite. You brace yourself for the descent even though you fear that you are too late, and Nephren-Ka has truly returned to Egypt…

Jellybean Games Announces Show & Tile Party Game

Jan 29, 2018

Today, Jellybean Games announced the launch of the Show & Tile Kickstarter, a new game from the designers of Seikatsu.

Show & Tile is a party game for 3-6 players, suitable for all ages! Each player takes two sets of tangram tiles, picks a word, and starts building. At the end of 90 seconds, put your tiles down and try to guess everyone’s words!

Can’t draw? No problem! Tangrams have been around for centuries, and can be used to construct anything you can imagine!

“Ever since I was 8 years old I’ve been fascinated by Tangrams,” said Isaac Shalev. “For someone who can’t draw, being able to create visually feels amazing. Show & Tile is a joyous game about sharing your creativity and I can’t wait to show it to you!”

“When Isaac first showed me this game, I kept coming back to play it again and again,” said publisher Peter C. Hayward. “I must have played it hundreds of times by now, but I’m still discovering new ways to convey ideas. Everyone I play with bring something different to the game!”

As with all Jellybean Games, the rules are straightforward and easy to learn. Players simultaneously create images out of tangrams, and then try to guess what everyone else has made. Extra points are awarded to players who tackle harder words – the fun comes from the challenge of trying to represent simple objects in a restricted way.

The game contains twelve double-sided sets of tangrams, a mat for each player, a sand timer, a scorepad, and a deck of more than three hundred words. Show & Tile is for 3-6 players aged 8+, and will launch on Kickstarter on the 30th of January, 2018
